What a Difference a Water Taxi Ride to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye Can Make

Pelican in San PedroLet me start by saying I’m very, very far from an expert on San Pedro Town, but my Mom and I took a break from the quiet, friendly Caye Caulker to spend a few hours in San Pedro.  There are some very distinct differences between Caye Caulker and San Pedro Town and I’m not just talking about the physical size of them.

  • The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the difference in culture.  I felt more of a Hispanic vibe in San Pedro, whereas on Caye Caulker there is an unmistakable Caribbean vibe.
  • The roads we walked along in San Pedro were ‘paved’ (actually bricked).  I prefer the sandy roads of Caye Caulker.  We did eventually find a sandy road near the beach.
  • Traffic, traffic, traffic…there were probably more vehicles (golf carts, cars, etc) on one block in San Pedro than on the entire island of Caye Caulker.  In fact, on Caye Caulker it’s rare to see anything more than just golf carts and bicycles.
  • With the vehicles parked along the streets, there wasn’t much room for a person walking and a vehicle to drive by at the same time.  I turned once and came within inches of a mirror on a passing minivan.

With all that said, I know that there are many people who love San Pedro (lots of choices…resorts, diving, etc).  My heart is on Caye Caulker, so I was glad to head back after just a few hours.  I really hope that Caye Caulker is able to stay a back-packer’s paradise/secret hide-away and doesn’t grow into another tourist hot spot (not that tourist hot spots are bad…just not my thing).

  1. I completely agree on all counts. We live on Ambergris Caye, which offers many more conveniences for full-timers, but I don’t like the traffic one bit. Every time we go to Caye Caulker, I can feel all my stress draining away.

    • Thanks Emily…I didn’t want to be too harsh because I know San Pedro Towm probably has a lot to offer, otherwise it wouldn’t be so popular. I’m jealous that you get to live in Belize. Maybe I will too someday.
