Tasty and Interesting Foods I Ate in Belize

I never intended for my blog to be about food, but as I’ve said before I love food. And travel includes a lot of new and loved food experiences.  I already told you about our lobster feasts and traditional Belizean Stewed Chicken yumminess, but I actually ate some other interesting and great tasting dishes in Belize…even some that might seem unexpected. Given the wide variety ethnicities in Belize, I think everything I ate was ‘Belizean’.

Serendib in San Ignacio

Both times I’ve visited Belize I’ve eaten at the Sri Lankan restaurant, Serendib, in San Ignacio. Both times I’ve enjoyed it. I was surprised to hear the ownership had changed in the last year, because the food seemed exactly the same. I suppose they must have kept the kitchen staff and that’s a good thing. We started with Pappadams (thin crispy lentil wafers) and Pickled Eggplant. For dinner I had chicken curry with savory rice and devilled potatoes.  Everything was excellent, but the devilled potatoes were spicy hot beyond belief…I couldn’t eat them, but I’m sure that someone who likes a bit more heat to their food would probably love them.

Tina’s in Hopkins

Tina’s is a shack on the side of the road.  She has a very small kitchen, if you can call it that.  She asked us what we wanted and I told her I’d take whatever was on the stove for the day.  She smiled.  It was chicken.  Probably stewed chicken, but a bit different that the rest of the stewed chicken I had eaten…it was still really good.  It came with Beans and Rice (not to be confused with Rice and Beans)…the beans and rice were not mixed together.

Innie’s in Hopkins

I don’t know what I was thinking when we ate at Innie’s…well, actually I do…I was thinking I need to step out of my comfort zone and try new things.  So, I tried a traditional Garifuna dish called Bundiga.  The menu described it as Seasoned Fish and Grated Banana w/Coconut Milk Gravy (I think that’s about what it said).  I’m sure if I had a Garifuna palette it probably would have tasted ok, but alas I do not have a Garifuna palette…not even close.  Luckily the fish was steamed so it was edible.  However, the Banana with Gravy lost in both the taste and texture departments.  I would describe the texture of the bananas as gummy (I have no idea is that’s what it’s supposed to be like).  In fact, I would describe the bananas as mashed…not grated.  Even the color of the food was ewww…very plain.  Someday I might work up the courage to eat a DIFFERENT traditional Garifuna dish, but I have a feeling that will be a ways off.

Chinese Food in Hopkins

I can’t remember the name and that’s probably a good thing, but I don’t think there are many Chinese restaurants in Hopkins.

We only ate here because the place we wanted to go to was packed due to the Superbowl.  We were really hungry and didn’t want to wait too long for food.  The joke was seriously on us.  We went to one of the few places that wasn’t packed…that should have been our first clue.  Actually I don’t think the food was too bad.  I can’t remember because I was so annoyed by the time I got my meal.  There were four of us.  Two of our friends got their food after about an hour.  Mom got her food about a half hour later and then it took another 30 to 45 minutes before I got mine.  I actually passed the point of hunger by then.  Did I say they were not very busy?  Maybe if our food would have come out in a reasonable amount of time or at least at the same time, I might have had a different impression.  I give it the thumbs down for this place.

Don Corleone’s on Caye Caulker

I decided to step out of my comfort zone again, but at least the ingredients were familiar to me this time.  I had Watermelon Salad.  It included watermelon, olives, and mint with feta cheese, olive oil, and squeezed lime.  I definitely want to try this again at home.  It looked pretty and it tasted good.  It was definitely refreshing.

Lily’s Treasure Chest in San Pedro Town

As you may know from my post about San Pedro Town, we couldn’t wait to get back to Caye Caulker.  We found Lily’s near the water taxi dock.  It was nice to set outside, watch the people walk by, and wait for the water taxi.  The shrimp ceviche was good…as expected…I haven’t had bad ceviche in Belize yet.

Fry Jacks at Sobre Las Ola’s and Hand 2 Mouth on Caye Caulker

Sobre Las Ola’s is one of my favorite stand-by places to eat on Caye Caulker.  It’s centrally located, the food and service are good, and they have wi-fi access (I’ve noticed you have to sit in the corner near the front for the wi-fi to work).  During my two trips to Belize, I hadn’t tried Fry Jacks.  No particular reason…I just hadn’t.  It’s probably a good thing.  Had I tried them sooner I probably would have eaten them with every single meal.  What could be better than fried bread?  I particularly liked them with honey.  Hand 2 Mouth is a little shack with a couple of tables just a bit south of Sobre Las Ola’s.  The service was great and the Fry Jacks were also really good.  It pays to stop by shacks once in a while.

There you have it…I’ve officially written about nearly every single thing I ate while in Belize.  I hope my words and pictures help you decide where you might want to eat during your visit to Belize.

  1. Oh, that makes me want Ceviche! We eat it when we’re in Cabo. YUM. I had to pin that watermelon salad. I need to try it too!

    • You’ll have to explain the ‘pin’ stuff to me someday. I don’t quite get it. But thanks for ‘pinning’.

  2. Interesting food!!….
Tina’s in Hopkins (chicken with rice), the chicken looks so much like what I’m having for lunch today, but I’m in KL now so that’s definitely different kind of taste right?
Can you describe the taste? Is it like more toward curry taste? or more toward chili taste? is it spicy?
