The tour eventually meandered away from the coast of Croatia and into the wilderness. And, a grand wilderness it was. Plitvice Lakes National Park is a Unesco site and while only one percent of it is covered in water, the lakes and cascading waterfalls are the main tourist transaction.
The cost of entrance was included in the Intrepid Tour, however I did noticed the price on the ticket was 110HKN (approximately $16.50USD). The tour started with a bus ride to the “top” of the lakes/waterfalls. I wound my way through the park on rustic wooden walkways (these ensure protection for the natural habitat), then boarded a boat for a trip across the largest lake. I proceeded to the “big waterfall” before climbing several switchbacks up to the gift shop/parking lot.
Much of the park reminded me of Western Washington with the largest difference being the quantity of waterfalls and the brilliant color of the water.
During the War
The Plitvice Lakes area was seized early in 1991. Much of the infrastructure was destroyed, but fortunately the habitat was spared.
