Ik Kil Cenote – An Untraditional Pool

Twitter’s #FriFotos theme this week is POOL. I don’t usually take photos of pools, so I wasn’t sure I’d have anything to share…especially since I live in Western Washington where pools are few and far between. Then I remembered an incredible place I visited the last time I was in MexicoIk Kil Cenote. I realize Ik Kil isn’t officially a POOL, but it was better than any pool I’ve ever swam in.

I visited Ik Kil as part of a trip to Chichen Itza. The Yucatan Peninsula is littered with cenotes , which are basically sinkholes that form when the limestone layer gets eroded by water. The water in Ik Kil was quite frigid so the best way to get in was jumping off the edge. This particular cenote was also home to A LOT of black catfish. I’ll admit the catfish were a bit creepy, but swimming here was amazing. I couldn’t be happier about this add-on stop to our trip. It was definitely worth it.
