Golden Gate Ferry (Sausalito to San Francisco)

My friend and I were headed to San Francisco one day and on the way I was using her phone to search for things to do. One of the things that came up was a ferry ride from Sausalito to San Francisco (Golden Gate Ferry). It was reported to be one of the most scenic ferry rides in the United States. Well then…we couldn’t resist. At that point we were just close enough to take the next exit to Sausalito. We got there in time to grab a quick lunch at a local diner near the ferry terminal.

About the time we were getting ready to board I realized I didn’t have my camera and neither did my friend. What a bummer…this was supposedly going to be one of the most scenic ferry rides in the United States and all we had were cell phone cameras. And thank goodness for those…you have to love technology. I can use my cell phone for nearly anything. I digress.

We boarded the ferry and we were only a few minutes into the ride when we realized the praises were 100% correct. Ok, I don’t know if they are 100% correct becaue I’m sure there are A LOT of ferries in the United States that I have not been on, but this one was amazing!

Golden Gate Bridge from Sausalito FerryOur first siting was the Golden Gate Bridge (here is where the forgotten cameras would have come in handy). The weather was horrible, but still if I had a better camera I think the photos would have been pretty amazing. Even the cell phone photo turned out ok.

A bit further we motored along the backside of Alcatraz. The ferry boat captain was kind enough to slow down so that weAlcatraz from Sausalito Ferry could enjoy the views.

The Sausalito ferry drops you off at the pier, so if you don’t want to deal with the traffic and parking of San Francisco this is a great option. Even if you don’t mind the traffic and parking it’s certainly worth trying at least once.

And if you time it right, you can get a great view of the city lights as you leave town.
