Caye Caulker Marine Reserve

After doing a full day snorkeling tour to Hol Chan, the very next day we stayed closer and did a half day snorkel tour of Caye Caulker Marine Reserve with Vanzie’s Tours.  This was my first time going out with Vanzie, but she was fantastic.  There were only five of us on the boat (she only takes a max of 8) so there was plenty of time for her to give each person attention.  Vanzie grew up on Caye Caulker and is extremely familiar with the area…both land and sea.  I’m happy to add Vanzie to my list of favorite tour operators in Belize.

It was also my first time at Caye Caulker Marine Reserve.  The snorkeling was really rough…a very strong current and poor visibility.  The highlight for me was Shark and Ray Alley (both Hol Chan and Caye Caulker Marine Reserves have one).  They are locations where the fishermen clean their catches for the day and so the nurse sharks and caribbean sting rays have become accustomed to the free meal.  They start swimming up to the boats when they hear/feel the engines.

If you haven’t already seen this video on Facebook, it makes me chuckle.  I didn’t realize that my camera was about to get whacked by a Caribbean Sting Ray until it was too late.  My reaction was priceless.
