During the ferry trip to Alaska, I met several great people. One of them heard that I was leaving via Skagway. She told me not to miss Carcross, which was a small town between Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and Skagway, Alaska. It used to be named Caribou Crossing and was changed to Carcross in the early 1900s because of the confusion between it and Cariboo in British Columbia. Carcross became a stopping place in the late 1800s for those headed to Dawson City for the Klondike Gold Rush.
General Store
The Matthew Watson General Store was built in 1898 as the Vandome Hotel in Bennett City. It just happens to be the oldest continually running business in the Yukon Territory according to its current owner.
Train Station
The local train station plays host to the White Pass and Yukon Route railway which runs from Whitehorse to Skagway.
Churches
Christianity has a Russian influence in Carcross.
