Almost a Ghost Town – Carcross, Yukon Territory

During the ferry trip to Alaska, I met several great people.  One of them heard that I was leaving via Skagway.  She told me not to miss Carcross, which was a small town between Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and Skagway, Alaska.  It used to be named Caribou Crossing and was changed to Carcross in the early 1900s because of the confusion between it and Cariboo in British Columbia.  Carcross became a stopping place in the late 1800s for those headed to Dawson City for the Klondike Gold Rush.

General Store

The Matthew Watson General Store was built in 1898 as the Vandome Hotel in Bennett City.  It just happens to be the oldest continually running business in the Yukon Territory according to its current owner.

  1. Thank you for including the great picture of our store on your website!

    • Of course Bonnie. It must have been your husband and daughter that I met that day. You have a great family. I heard your other daughter is in Belize right now. I LOVE Belize. She will have the time of her life.
